Question by Doctor Jack: Would you support medical testing on convicted murderers?
Obviously there is only so far animal testing can go in there search for new medicine and vaccines. The only way to ensure effectiveness is sometimes to use data from direct human research. However, some research is inherently life threatening and volunteers cannot be used.
In the search for a vaccine against HIV or a cure for cancer etc., do you think it is morally justifiable to experiment on the most reformable convicted murderers? For example, if a vaccine against HIV were developed it would take years of testing on individuals at risk of contracting HIV to prove effectiveness. It is inherently difficult to prove if the vaccine or medicine was effective in these conditions. However, if we allowed experiments on serious criminals we could find an effective vaccine (or even cure) in a fraction of that time. If this allows us to create an even partially successful vaccine for HIV even 6 months faster, then it will still saves many thousands in the third world and beyond.

I personally think the ends would justify the means used to discover this. While I think the death penalty is useless and unjustifiable because it only serves the purpose of revenge, I feel in a way these people will be giving back to a society they took so much from. It goes without saying that we would try and reduce the risk as much as possible, and consider each experiment for its scientific worthiness. Medical science can be greatly aided by discoveries that are deemed unethical admittedly by most, but what of the greater good?

Finally, I can understand the comparisons with what the Nazis did – but they used medical experiments of innocent and vulnerable people mostly to prove ludicrous racial theories. These were not used to aid humanity but to find new ways to destroy life. I don’t support what the Dr. Mengele or the Nazis did in any way. My greatest concern in my profession is to save and improve lives, and sometimes this takes difficult decisions.

Please take a moment to consider this before answering.
Some of the greatest discoveries in medical history were made with approaches that would now be deemed unethical. How far should ethics restrain the pursuit of medical miracles?

I would not support it unless the prisoners agreed to the testing.

There is no justice in causing further suffering to a person who has already been punished for his deeds.

I’m going to go with Kant, and say that people should never be used as a means to an end.

Depends of if I look at the question emotionally or logically. Logic says it cost more than a million a year to keep a convicted murderer on death row – that would suggest that said murderer could contribute to society by being a guinea pig. My only hesitation is that a jury of ones peers is not infallible by any means.

NO. This would be wrong to do.

    Such a suggestion is sinister.

this isn’t world war two. involuntary human experimentation is a crime against humanity.

it can only be done with consent.

Innocent people are often convicted. Fix our justice system first, then we’ll talk.

So interesting! If the convicted murderer on death row were to consent to these experiments, then yes, I think they should be done. But only with consent of the individual person involved….Blessings!

No. By virtue of incarceration, they cannot be volunteers. What if new exculpatory evidence arose after severe injury had been inflicted? It violates the principle of cruel and unusual punishment and the Declaration of Helsinki.

I would only consider it justifiable if the convicted murderer signed consent to be tested or experimented on. Afterall, they are human (maybe not morally correct but still humans). I do understand what you’re stating and in a way consider it a decent theory on how to end animal testing.

My first thought after reading your post was this: Has the Government created these ailments, sicknesses, or diseases for some unknown and mysterious revenge or cruelty? Is the government now trying to find cures and treatments to what they are responsible for? — That was a few thoughts that ran through my mind for some reason.

And in the end, I have to ask myself a question: Is there a reason for everything?

But see, how far will that law go? Will we be infecting 18-year-old girls who killed a potential rapist in self-defence with AIDS? Making things like that legal always mutates into something truly ugly- like immediate abortion (day-after pill) evolving into partial birth late term abortion being okay. Boundaries are always being pushed once you put the first toe across a line.

I think it would fall under the cruel and unusual punishment category

  21. carsonmcarson
    December 19, 2010 | 7:47 pm

    what if they were innocent?
that’s as inhumane as it gets. ever hear of a country which prides itself (supposedly) on preventing cruel and unusual punishment?
remember how embarrassing guantanamo bay has been?
hiv and cancer are among the most painful ways to die. not even the biggest low life criminals deserve such a fate
you should be ashamed of yourself for even proposing this

and either way, you would never be able to tell if a cancer vaccine is successful, because you can’t give people cancer.
and there wouldnt be a small chance of getting aids. the only way they wouldnt would be if the vaccine worked because you would have to expose them to aids and see if the body repelled it.

it would just subject thousands of americans to an inhumanly painful death

if they did volunteer, however, i see no reason why they couldn’t
but think about it. how many rapists, murderers, and drug lords are really going to suffer through years of pain for the betterment of humanity? these aren’t exactly heroes you know…

If the experimentation was humane, was not forced on an unwilling “guinea pig” and with possible incentives, including relief from the death penalty, should one survive the medical procedures…

Apart from this or a similar set of preconditions,I would consider it to be barbarism and on par with both Communist and Nazi, practices…

I understand the intentions, but could not in good concience, justify the means.
